Prior to the surgery, Manju’s condition had gotten so bad that it was affecting her daily life. According to urologist, Dr Ajit Sawant, “She was no longer able to do her day to day activities because of the huge mass in her abdomen. In the past three years she had been referred to multiple hospitals, however because of the enormous size, the surgery was deferred. Her CT scan showed a large – 31 cms x 19 cms — tumor completely replacing the intestines and the pancreas to the left half of the abdomen.”
Dr. Sawant continued, “The enormity of the surgery can be understood by comparing the weight of the kidney tumor –5.5kg with the weight of a normal kidney which is 110 to 140s.”
It’s actually hard to believe that a person could live with such a large tumor in their body, but somehow Manju made it.
In the end, the fact that doctors were able to complete this surgery without any complications is nothing short of a medical miracle. The Guinness Book of World Records has also confirmed that this was “the largest tumour in the renal area ever to be discovered.”
